A steady tempo, no app

To practise a piece, nothing beats a steady tempo. This metronome schedules each click via the audio clock, removing the drift of classic timers, and adds accent, time signature and tap tempo.

  1. Set the tempo

With the slider, or tap the beat with “Tap”.

  2. Choose the time signature

    2/4, 3/4, 4/4 or 6/8, with accent on beat 1.

  3. Start

The dots flash in time with the sound.

Sound starts after a click (browser policy). At 60 BPM there is exactly one beat per second.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn’t this metronome drift?

It uses the audio clock (Web Audio API) and schedules each click ahead of time, rather than relying on imprecise JavaScript timers. The tempo therefore stays stable even during long sessions.

What is tap tempo?

Tap the “Tap” button in time with a track: the metronome averages your intervals and sets the BPM automatically. Handy to find a song’s tempo without knowing it.

What does the accent on the first beat mean?

The first beat of each bar sounds higher to mark the start of the cycle. In 4/4, you hear “STRONG-weak-weak-weak”, which helps keep the rhythmic thread.

Which tempo should I practise at?

Start slow, at a BPM where you play without mistakes, then increase in steps of 5 to 10 BPM. Practising cleanly at a moderate tempo improves faster than playing fast with errors.
