BPM and interval between taps
| BPM | Interval |
|---|---|
| 60 | 1000 ms |
| 120 | 500 ms |
| 140 | 429 ms |
| 174 | 345 ms |
Formula: BPM = 60,000 ÷ average interval (ms). A pause over 2 s resets the series.
Frequently asked questions
How is the BPM computed?
On each tap, the tool measures the interval since the previous one. It averages the recent intervals, then divides 60,000 ms by that average. For example, tapping every 500 ms gives 60,000 / 500 = 120 BPM.
How many times should I tap?
Two taps are enough for a first estimate, but the more you tap (up to about ten), the more the average stabilises and smooths out small irregularities. A pause over 2 seconds resets the counter.
What does “stability” measure?
It is how regular your intervals are: 100% means perfectly even taps. The more your intervals vary, the lower the stability. Useful to practise keeping a steady tempo.
What is it for in practice?
DJs and musicians use it to find a track’s tempo to mix it, replay it or set a metronome. It is also a simple way to check whether you slow down or speed up while playing.
