Estimate the number of descendants
Enter the average number of children per person and the number of generations: the tool gives the total and a per-generation breakdown.
The method
- Generation i: cⁱ descendants
- Total = c + c² + … + cⁿ
- Exponential growth
- Simplified theoretical model
Example
| Children / person | Generations | Total |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 5 | 62 |
| 3 | 5 | 363 |
| 2 | 10 | 2,046 |

Frequently asked questions
How are descendants estimated?
At each generation the count is multiplied by the average number of children. The total is the sum: c + c² + … + cⁿ.
Example?
With 2 children per person over 5 generations: 2 + 4 + 8 + 16 + 32 = 62 descendants.
Is it realistic?
It is a simplified model: it assumes everyone has the same number of children and that they all reproduce.
Why does it explode?
It is exponential growth: even 2–3 children per person yields thousands of descendants in 10 generations.
