Calculate a cousin relationship
For each person, enter the number of generations to the common ancestor (1 = their child): the tool gives the degree and removal.
The rule
- Degree = min(g1, g2) − 1
- Removed = |g1 − g2|
- 2 & 2 → first cousins
- 2 & 3 → first cousins, once removed

Frequently asked questions
How do I count generations?
1 = child of the common ancestor. Two grandchildren therefore count 2 each (first cousins).
How is the degree calculated?
Degree = (smaller of the two) − 1. Two × 2 → degree 1 (first cousins); two × 3 → degree 2 (second cousins).
And removed?
Removed = difference of the two numbers. 2 and 3 → first cousins, once removed.
What if one is 1?
It leaves the cousin line: it is the aunt/uncle ↔ niece/nephew line (with “great-” as the gap grows).
