Calculate the fabric for a project
Enter the number of pieces, their dimensions, the fabric width and a margin: the tool lays out the pieces and gives the fabric length.
The method
- Pieces/row = fabric width ÷ piece width
- Rows = pieces ÷ pieces per row
- Length = rows × piece length + margin
- Add a margin for seams and matching
Example
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Pieces | 4 (40 × 60 cm) |
| Fabric width | 140 cm |
| Pieces per row | 3 |
| Fabric to buy | ≈ 1.30 m |

Frequently asked questions
What is fabric width?
It is the width of the fabric roll, often 110, 140 or 150 cm. It sets how many pieces fit side by side.
How is the yardage calculated?
Pieces per row = fabric width ÷ piece width; rows = pieces ÷ pieces per row; length = rows × piece length + margin.
Why add a margin?
For seam allowances, grainline, pattern matching and pre-washing (shrinkage).
What about directional prints?
With a one-way print you can’t rotate pieces: plan for extra fabric.
