Understand your cat’s real age

An “adult” cat of 5 already equals 36 human years. This tool applies the veterinary scale and also shows the life stage, useful to adapt diet and check-ups.

  1. Enter the cat’s age

    In years (half-years accepted).

  2. Read the human equivalent

    Computed with the veterinary scale.

  3. Spot the life stage

Kitten, junior, adult, mature, senior, geriatric.

A few equivalents

Cat ageHuman ageStage
1 yr15Junior
2 yr24Junior
5 yr36Adult
10 yr56Mature
15 yr76Geriatric

Basis: 1 yr ≈ 15, 2 yr ≈ 24, then +4 per year. These are averages; your vet is the reference.

Frequently asked questions

How does the feline scale work?

A cat’s first year equals about 15 human years, the second brings the total to 24, then each additional year adds about 4 human years. So a 5-year-old cat equals 36, and a 10-year-old cat equals 56.

Why do the first years count so much?

A kitten reaches maturity very fast: at 1 year it is already a young adult. That is why the first year “counts” as 15 human years and the second adds 9 more. After 2 years the pace settles at +4 years per year.

What do the life stages mean?

Vets distinguish: kitten (0-6 months), junior (up to ~2 years), adult (3-6 years), mature (7-10 years), senior (11-14 years) and geriatric (15+). These stages guide health monitoring and diet.

Does an indoor cat live longer?

Generally yes: indoor cats often live 12 to 18 years, sometimes over 20, far more than outdoor cats more exposed to accidents and disease. The scale applies regardless of lifestyle.
