Frequently asked questions
What is the NATO alphabet for?
To spell letters that sound alike (B/P/D/T, M/N…) without ambiguity. You say “Bravo” for B, “Papa” for P. Essential on the phone, on radio, in aviation and to dictate a code or a name.
Are digits included?
Yes. Each digit is spoken in full: 0 “Zero”, 1 “One”, 2 “Two”… 9 “Nine”. The tool converts letters and digits; other characters (punctuation) are left as-is.
Why “Alfa” and “Juliett” spelled that way?
NATO spells them deliberately: “Alfa” (not Alpha) and “Juliett” (two T’s) so that non-English speakers do not mispronounce them. It is the official ICAO/NATO spelling.
Does the alphabet change by language?
No: it is a single international code, identical everywhere. Only the local pronunciation varies slightly. This tool always uses the official words Alfa, Bravo, Charlie… whatever the interface language.
