Put a price on every socket

The electricity bill is a black box: you pay the total without knowing which appliance costs what. Three inputs suffice — watts, hours per day, kWh price — to get the real cost per day, month and year, and decide with full knowledge.

  1. Start from a preset

Fridge, TV, PC, air conditioner, LED bulb, heater — or enter your own appliance.

  2. Adjust the usage

Real hours per day and your kWh rate (on your bill).

  3. Compare

The annual cost reveals the true gluttons — often surprising ones.

Typical annual costs (at $0.25/kWh)

ApplianceProfileCost / year
LED bulb 10 W5 h/day≈ $4.60
TV 100 W4 h/day≈ $37
Refrigerator 150 W8 h equiv./day≈ $110
Desktop PC 250 W8 h/day≈ $183
Air conditioner 1,500 W6 h/day (summer)≈ $205 (3 months)
Heater 2,000 W5 h/day (winter)≈ $305 (4 months)

Mind standby too: 10 devices idling at 2 W each is ~175 kWh a year, about $44 for… nothing. A switched power strip cuts them off in one gesture.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert watts into money?

Energy (kWh) = power (W) × hours ÷ 1,000, then cost = kWh × kWh price. A 2,000 W heater running 5 h uses 10 kWh: at $0.25/kWh, that is $2.50 per day — $76 per month of heating.

Where do I find my appliance’s power?

On the label or rating plate (in W or kW), in the manual, or via a plug-in power meter ($10-15) that measures real consumption — the best option for variable-draw appliances like refrigerators.

Why does the fridge preset not use 24 h?

Its compressor runs in cycles: plugged in 24/7, it actually consumes the equivalent of only 6 to 10 h at full power. The 8 h preset reflects that reality.

Which appliances cost the most?

Anything that heats or cools: electric heating, water heater, air conditioner, dryer, oven. A single 2,000 W heater used through winter costs more than a whole house of LED lighting over the entire year.
