Frequently asked questions
What is body surface area (BSA)?
It is the total area of the skin, expressed in m². It is used in medicine, for example to adjust the dose of certain treatments (chemotherapy) or estimate metabolism, because it reflects body size better than weight alone.
Which formula should I choose?
Mosteller (√(height × weight / 3600)) is simple and the most used clinically. Du Bois is historic and a bit more complex. Both give close results; the tool shows both and their average.
What is a typical value?
In adults, BSA is around 1.7 m² (often 1.5 to 2.0 m²). For 170 cm and 70 kg, Mosteller gives about 1.82 m². Children have a much smaller BSA.
Can I use it for medical dosing?
No. This tool is informational. Any dose calculation must be performed and verified by a healthcare professional with full clinical data. Never change a treatment based on this result.
